The indigenous community members from San Jose de Uchupiamonas, organized to create a community tourism venture that promotes the development from the entire community. Chalalan offers a great experience through walks around Madidi National Park, canoeing, traditional night music, dance and stories from Tacana – Quechua culture.

A tour with Chalalán, one of the most successful community projects from Bolivia located in Madidi National Park in the depths of the Bolivian Amazon, is a wonderful way to explore the most beautiful face of one of the richest protected areas of the world where the indigenous community members of San José de Uchupiamonas put their heart into every detail so that tourists find at the ecolodge, comfort and convenience needed in their adventure through the jungle.

In CHALALAN, jungle is your host; you only need to leave the city behind and prepare for a great experience, walking through a maze of trails that surround the lodge so you can discover the Madidi National Park.

Depending on the duration of your stay can range from 4-6 days, we offer a variety of activities ranging from tours at theme paths, canoeing and evening walks; likewise we invite you to participate in a traditional music night, dance and stories from Tacana – Quechua culture. If your stay is longer, we suggest a visit to the community of San José de Uchupiamonas, three hours distant from the ecolodge.

Bolivian Amazon - 4 DAYS /3 Nights

Day 1 The first day morning we pick you up at your hotel in La Paz and take you to El Alto airport in order to take a flight to Rurrenabaque (40mn) Amazon town, along that flight you will enjoy an amazing view on the Cordillera Real mountain range. In the afternoon guides of TES – Turismo Ecológico Social or Social Ecological Tourism – will take you to the Nuevos Horizontes village, where the craftswomen association will show you the whole Jipi Japa (palm) manufacturing process. After that we go back to Rurrenabaque where we have dinner together with the TES guide, followed by accommodation in a comfortable hotel.

Day 2 The second day we travel by boat to Chalalán on river Beni and later get to Madidi on river Tuichi watching the fauna and the Bolivian Amazon spectacular landscape. That outward trip takes 5 to 6 hours. In the afternoon we go for a short walk along the Paraba path where your guide will show you building plants, useful timber, palms and traditional and sustainable use of the natural resources. After dinner we suggest a short nocturnal (1 to 2 hours) canoe trip in order to watch amphibians, night birds, fishing bats and alligators that are easily sighted because of the amazing glittering of their eyes.

Day 3 The third day morning we will walk through the primary forest watching and learning about the close forest and the wildlife. After lunch we’ll have a nap on the hammocks or a swim in Lake Chalalán. In the afternoon we invite you to another walk to learn about medicine plants and other forest resources. After that we go back to the hostel by boat and have a traditional “dunucuabi” dinner.  Later we propose a short nocturnal walk along the Paraba or Silbador path. Back in the hostel you can join the traditional Quechua – Tacana night show with music and local dances performed by the San José de Uchupiamonas village community.

Day 4 Buffet-type breakfast at the hostel dining-room and after that a short walk to the Chalalán port to board a boat for your return trip to Rurrenabaque. This return trip by boat takes 3 hours. During the trip we recommend you to pay attention to the Bolivian Amazon fauna. Back in Rurrenabaque we’ll take you to the airport. At the El Alto airport, a driver will be waiting for you to transfer you to your La Paz hotel.

Advices We recommend our visitors to carry light clothing, an insect repellent and a small rucksack for personal belongings.

Chalalán 4 days /3 nights

Programme
The flight from La Paz to Rurrenabaque takes 50 minutes. During the flight you will overfly the wonderful Tropical Andean Cordillera mountain range and the Amazon forest. We will wait for you at the Rurrenabaque airport and you will be accommodated in a first class hotel. Enjoy your free afternoon and visit the Rurrenabaque Amazon town.

After breakfast you will board the boat that will take you to Chalalán. That boat trip offers you the opportunity to watch the Bala Canyon on river Beni, afterwards you enter the Madidi on river Tuichi  watching the Bolivian Amazon fauna and spectacular landscape. The outward trip takes around 5.30 hours. We get to the Chalalán harbour at 14.30. From there on there is a 25 minute walk to the hostel where a welcoming lunch is served at our dining-room. After lunch you can have a nap in our hammocks or a swim in Lake Chalalán. At 4.00 p.m. we go for a short walk on which you will learn about building plants, useful timber, palms and natural resource traditional and sustainable use.  We will reach the Lake mirador from where you can view the wonderful Chalalán lagoon landscape and the vast tropical primary Madidi forest. After that we return to the lake and start a canoe trip along the shores of the Chalalán lagoon where you will view the sunset and local fauna: monkeys, birds, insects, bats, etc. After dinner we invite you to a night canoe trip to watch amphibians, nocturnal birds, fishing bats and alligators that are easily sighted because of the stunning glittering of their eyes.

After third day breakfast we go for a walk through the woodland (a 3 to 4 hour trek) where you will learn about the close forest and wildlife. In the afternoon we go for a short walk along the set of thematic paths where you will learn about medicinal plants and other interesting issues. Back at the hostel you can make your choice among the following activity options: handicraft activities, canoe trips on the lake and others. Later our traditional river fish-based “dunucuabi” dinner is served. Then we go back to the forest for a night walk to watch amphibians, reptiles, insects, tarantulas, rodents, birds and nocturnal monkeys. Back in the hostel you can enjoy the traditional Quechua – Tacana night show with local music and dances from the San José de Uchupiamonas village community.

After fourth day breakfast we will walk to the Chalalán port in order to board a boat for the return trip to Rurrenabaque. That return trip by boat only takes 3 hours. We reach Rurrenabaque before noon and take the return flight to La Paz.

All along the fourth day we will have a long (6 hour) walk through different paths until reaching river Eslabón. There you can do some fishing or swimming in the natural river pools. Characteristics of the Eslabón area make it an ideal site to learn about local history. This trekking is fit for all visitors and offers a major possibility to watch wildlife such as spider monkeys, tapir, venison, wild pigs and if you are very lucky maybe a jaguar or a leopard. After dinner you can make your choice among optional activities such as a canoe night trip to watch the nocturnal fauna.

After fifth day breakfast we are going to walk until Chalalán port and board the boat for the return trip to Rurrenabaque. That return trip by boat only takes 3 hours. We reach Rurrenabaque before noon and take the return flight to La Paz.

Along the fourth day we will have short and long walks towards Raya Mayu or Eslabón rivers. These walks include all the provided thematics such as fauna watching, ecological processes, interpreting of the different primary forest habitats and finally it is possible to do some piranha fishhook fishing on Raya Mayu River. At night you can go back to the woodland in order to watch more animals.
The fifth day we’ll have a long (5 hour) trek to Salitral, an area where animals gather in order to feed on mineral clay. It is an ideal site to watch wildlife and talk about animal behaviour. Then we take the return trip by boat along river Tuichi. This trek is suitable for all visitors. The total duration of the journey is around 8 hours. This route provides a major watching possibility as to wildlife such as spider monkeys, howling monkeys, capuchin monkeys, tapir, venison, wild pigs, sloths, different kinds of parrots and if you are very lucky maybe jaguar.

After sixth day breakfast we are going to walk until Chalalán port and board the boat for the return trip to Rurrenabaque. That return trip by boat only takes 3 hours. We reach Rurrenabaque before noon and take the return flight to La Paz.
